University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students have been named to a search committee for a new vice president for student life.

On Oct. 23, The Ohio State University named Melissa Shivers its new vice president for student life effective Jan. 6, 2020.

In order to continue the forward momentum within the Division of Student Life established by Shivers, the UI will work with its shared governance leaders to conduct an internal search for Shivers’ replacement.

“Vibrancy and strength in our Division of Student Life is critical to the overall success of our students. We cannot lose the momentum built over the past several years in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, mental health, fraternity and sorority life, and on-campus housing, to name a few,” says UI President Bruce Harreld.

The search committee includes:

  • Sandra Daack-Hirsch, associate professor, College of Nursing, and director of the College of Nursing PhD program
  • Isabela Flores, director of justice and equity, UI Student Government
  • Steve Goddard, dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
  • Dexter Golinghorst, president, UI Graduate and Professional Student Government
  • Bria Marcelo, director of diversity resources, Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Laura McLeran, associate vice president for external relations and senior advisor to the president
  • Noel Mills, president, UI Student Government
  • Heather Mineart, assistant to the DEO, Department of Physics and Astronomy, and vice president/president-elect of UI Staff Council
  • Angie Reams, associate vice president and dean of students

“We have remarkable talent all across our campus, and I am sure the committee will develop an exciting slate of candidates for the next leader of student life,” says Harreld.

Harreld expects to make the final selection this fall.
