Geist is associate dean of faculty affairs and development in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and professor of internal medicine.

She will begin her new role on Nov. 15.

Geist succeeds Kevin Kregel, who was named executive vice provost and senior associate provost for faculty in July 2019.

As associate dean of faculty affairs and development in the Carver College of Medicine for the last 16 years, Geist was primarily responsible for the human resources and faculty development activities of the office. Her efforts focused on large and small group seminars, as well as individual consultation related to the growth and success of faculty.

Geist also was responsible for the promotion and tenure process and oversaw the annual review process. She is well-versed in faculty-related policy and procedure, and at helping make connections with other faculty in the college to support career development plans.

She also serves as professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine, where she remains an active clinician.

“Lois has an impressive history of educational leadership and has been instrumental in faculty success in the Carver College of Medicine,” says executive vice president and provost Montserrat Fuentes, who announced the appointment. “She is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence for our faculty and our students, and I am excited to welcome her into her new position.”

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve the university faculty in this larger role. I have much to learn, and I plan to connect with the greater university community in ways that will enhance the growth and development of our greatest resource, the faculty,” says Geist.

Geist earned an MS in biology and an MD from Case Western Reserve University. She completed a residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland and a fellowship at the UI Hospitals & Clinics. She is a member of the Pulmonary Subspecialty Board, the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Geist's appointment must be approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
