The University of Iowa is ranked 34th, up from 38th, in the latest rankings of the nation’s public universities published by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine ranks universities on a variety of indicators of academic quality in the following categories: student outcomes such as rates of graduation and retention, assessment by academic peers, faculty resources, overall financial resources, ACT/SAT scores, high school class standing, and alumni giving.

The university improved nationally in its overall score, its graduation and retention rank, its faculty resources rank, and financial resources rank. These underlying metrics are important for the university to track because they align with the UI’s strategic plan as well as improve student success.

The university is ranked 84th among all public and private universities, up from 89th last year.

The magazine also ranks undergraduate business and engineering programs. Among all public and private universities, the Tippie College of Business is ranked 31st, while the College of Engineering is ranked 66th among those colleges that offer doctoral degrees. Among public universities, Tippie is ranked 19th and the College of Engineering is ranked 36th.

Iowa also ranked 52nd on the Best Colleges of For Veterans list and 77th on the Most Innovative Schools list.

The UI was also among the colleges and universities ranked as a Best Value.
