More than 5,700 undergraduate students at the University of Iowa were named to the dean’s list for the 2019 spring semester.
Guidelines for inclusion on the list are:
Undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, the Tippie College of Business, and University College who achieve a grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher on 12 semester hours or more of UI graded coursework during a given semester or summer session and who have no semester hours of “I” (incomplete) or “O” (no grade reported) during the same semester are recognized by inclusion on the dean’s list for that semester.
More than 600 undergraduate students at the UI were named to the president’s list for the 2019 spring semester, while some 4,800 students received degrees at the close of the semester.
Undergraduate students in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine can qualify for the dean’s list with fewer than 12 semester hours of graded credit if deemed appropriate by the college.
Beginning in fall 2011, College of Nursing students participating in clinical courses must have a total of 12 semester hours of earned credit, with eight semester hours of graded credit with a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
Courses offered on a S/U (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) or P/S (pass/fail) basis do not count toward graded credit for inclusion on the dean's list.

The UI uses an online system called Merit for recognizing and promoting outstanding student achievement on campus. Merit allows schools to create digital badges for students who receive prominent awards throughout their scholastic careers (dean’s list, president’s list, etc.). Students who receive a badge will be able to customize a personal web page that serves as an online portfolio of collegiate achievements.
Students have the ability to share achievements granted by the UI through Merit on social media channels like Facebook and Twitter. Students also can add their own activities, such as work experience, intramural participation, leadership positions, and more. The system also provides a hometown news service through readMedia, allowing local news outlets across the country a chance to receive updates about students at the university from their areas.
Students who receive a Merit achievement will be notified via email and then have the chance to claim their Merit pages. Once students claim their page, they can add photos and activities, and share their page.
