The University of Iowa Graduate College appointed Steven M. Varga to the position of associate dean, effective Jan. 1, 2019. 

Varga is a professor of Microbiology and Immunology. He earned his PhD in immunology from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worchester and joined the UI faculty as an assistant professor in 2003. His research interests are centered on studies of the immune response to respiratory viruses including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

In the lab, Varga actively advises, supervises, and mentors students both at the graduate and undergraduate level. His administrative experience includes serving as director of the interdisciplinary graduate program in immunology and chairing the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Executive Committee.
