Old Capitol, bold canvas.

The Hofstetters have projected their art around the world, on ancient structures and backdrops as unique as icebergs.

Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter and his daughter Céline used the iconic University of Iowa building as the backdrop for a thrilling visual display Oct. 4, during the Iowa stop of the Light Art Grand Tour USA.

The Hofstetters started traveling the country in 2017, using their visual art to help people in the United States understand how the U.S. and Switzerland share the same core values of freedom, liberty, and democracy. In each state, they project their light art onto one monument or landmark. The Hofstetters weaved University of Iowa–specific imagery into their Iowa presentation—Jackson Pollock's Mural, which was given to the university in 1951; an image of deep space captured by UI faculty member Cornelia Lang; and images from the university's Central Microscopy Research Facility, to name a few.

Old Capitol joins an illustrious list of monuments featured on the tour: the Wright Brothers National Memorial in North Carolina, George Washington’s Mount Vernon in Virginia, and the USS Yorktown in South Carolina.

Iowa Now captured moments from "rehearsals" on Oct. 2 and 3 and from the actual Oct. 4 show. Scroll through the above gallery for a closer look.
