University of Iowa faculty, staff, students, and a representative of the Iowa City community have been named to the search committee to replace Georgina Dodge, the UI’s former chief diversity officer, who resigned in 2017 for a similar position at Bucknell University.

Claire Fox, professor of English, and Liz Tovar, associate director for academic services in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, are co-chairs of the committee.

The following committee members will join Fox and Tovar in the search:

    • Alex Bare, undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, UI Student Government representative
    • Nancy Bird, executive director of the Iowa City Downtown District
    • Dan Clay, dean of the College of Education
    • Diane Finnerty, assistant provost for faculty
    • Linda Kroon, director of the Women’s Resource and Action Center
    • Erin Thomas-Lewis, vice president of the University of Iowa Center for Advancement
    • Laura McLeran, senior advisor to the president and associate vice president for external relations
    • Gabriela Rivera, assistant director for diversity, inclusion, and student success, undergraduate program, Henry B. Tippie College of Business
    • Mel Sanders, associate director of student-athlete academic services, eligibility, and advising in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
    • Danielle Thomas, diversity chair for Graduate and Professional Student Government
    • Susan Vos, clinical associate professor in the College of Pharmacy
    • Tab Wiggins, assistant director of multicultural and international programs in the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership

In addition, an advisory committee has been created to provide assistance with on-campus interviews and reviewing application materials for the finalists. The advisory committee consists of:

    • Bria Marcelo, diversity resources director in the Chief Diversity Office
    • Jennifer Modestou, director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity
    • Tracy Peterson, director of diversity programs and K–12 outreach in the College of Engineering
    • Nadine Petty, executive director of the Center for Diversity and Enrichment
    • Tevin Robbins, assistant director of student success in the Tippie College of Business Undergraduate Program Office
    • Sherry Watt, professor in the College of Education

Melissa Shivers, vice president for student life, is serving as interim chief diversity officer.

The committee has selected Isaacson, Miller, Inc. to lead the search. The company most recently assisted with the search that resulted in the hiring of J. Brooks Jackson as the new vice president for medical affairs and dean of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and is assisting with the search for the next dean of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The search is expected to begin in late August and end by the close of the fall 2018 semester.
