University of Iowa President J. Bruce Harreld has appointed Dan Matheson the new chair of the Presidential Committee on Athletics (PCA). Matheson replaces Liz Hollingworth, who served two years as chair and will begin a two-year term as a faculty athletics representative on the committee.

Matheson is director of the UI’s Sport and Recreation Management Program, and before coming to the UI worked as an NCAA associate director of enforcement and as the New York Yankees’ director of baseball operations. Harreld says Matheson’s two years of service on the PCA, as well as his deep knowledge of sport industry issues, have prepared him to serve as a campus leader in this capacity.

Hollingworth, a professor in the College of Education, will take over the faculty athletics representative role previously filled by David Drake, professor of microbiology in the College of Dentistry. In addition, Nicole Grosland will begin an additional five-year term as faculty athletics representative; the professor of biomedical engineering has served in the role since 2016.

The PCA is the advisory committee for the UI president and the director of athletics on policies governing the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. In addition to ensuring consistency among Big Ten, NCAA, university, and state policies, the PCA periodically apprises faculty, staff, and student constituency organizations of the status of athletics at the university and nationally.
