UI senior leaders share reasons and methods for staying active
Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Each year, senior leaders at the University of Iowa form a team for the Live Healthy Iowa 10-Week Challenge. One of their chief motivators: to elevate their well-being, which has an impact on their own lives and the UI workplace.

Why this particular pursuit? Well-being is a state of optimal health, happiness, and purpose. Research identifies that employees who report high well-being in their lives are more engaged at work. Anyone can be a leader in promoting well-being by modeling a healthy lifestyle for those around them.

The healthy choices made by the team—composed of Gary Barta (director of intercollegiate athletics), Terry Johnson (chief financial officer and treasurer), Rod Lehnertz (senior VP of finance and operations), Lynette Marshall (president/CEO of the UI Center for Advancement), Laura McLeran (special adviser to the Office of the President), Carroll Reasoner (VP for legal affairs and general counsel), and Melissa Shivers (VP of student life)—have a ripple effect beyond each individual choice.

Several leaders shared their reasons and methods for prioritizing their well-being:

“Finding time to get to the gym while tackling a busy schedule can be challenging, so reserving time on the calendar, day or night, is key for me. If I don’t schedule it, something will always get in the way—having excuses is a pattern I try to avoid. Personally, I like to hit the track or treadmill, then do some core work and end with some light weights. Having a limited time to squeeze in my workouts, I try to keep my heart rate up for the whole session. I feel best when I can work out four times a week, but when things are hectic, I still try to make it to the gym a couple of times—just so that it doesn’t hurt too much the next time!”

“My favorite way to fit exercise into a full day is an early morning walk—usually between 5 and 6 a.m.; sometimes alone, sometimes with a friend. I love being outside in all kinds of weather and starting the day in such a peaceful yet invigorating way.”

“Stress management feels a little easier on the days I have a good workout. I may not find the fountain of youth to live longer, but I’m hoping regular exercise improves my quality of life for the years I’m here!”

“I enjoy being active because it helps increase energy and focus. Zumba is my favorite cardio!”

“Staying active is critical to a sense of well-being and to achieve work/life balance. Being part of the team and knowing that I have to document daily my activities helps keep me motivated.”
