A university search committee has announced the first finalist for the next University of Iowa vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

John M. Carethers, professor of human genetics and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, will meet with faculty, staff, and leadership at UI Health Care on Tuesday, Oct. 3, during a visit to campus. His curriculum vitae is available on the search committee’s website.

Carethers will also participate in a public forum from 5 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 3 in the Prem Sahai Auditorium of the Medical Education Research Facility (MERF), after which he will attend a public reception from 6 to 7 p.m. in the MERF Atrium.

Carethers is one of two finalists invited to participate in a final round of interviews at the UI. The second candidate will visit campus Monday, Oct. 9, and will also participate in an open forum and public reception. That candidate’s name and curriculum vitae will be published 24 hours prior to their arrival.

After the campus visits, UI President J. Bruce Harreld will make a final selection and announce the new vice president for medical affairs and dean of medicine later this fall.
