The University of Iowa moved up two spots to No. 31 in the latest rankings of the nation’s best public universities published by U.S. News & World Report.

The 2018 U.S. News & World Report “Best Colleges” rankings, released Tuesday, Sept. 12, place the UI in a tie with Miami University of Ohio.

The UI is currently ranked 78th in the “Best National Universities” category, which contains 300 U.S. public, private, and for-profit institutions. That ranking is up four spots from last year.

The magazine also ranks undergraduate programs in business and engineering. Among all public and private universities, the UI Henry B. Tippie College of Business placed 31st, up two spots from last year. It’s ranked 20th among public universities.

The College of Engineering is ranked 34th among public universities with doctoral programs, up from 41st last year. Among all public and private universities, the College of Engineering is ranked 61st, up two places from last year.

The U.S. News rankings are based on reputational data obtained from questionnaires filled out by administrators at more than 1,300 colleges and universities, as well as from objective data submitted to a national data archive. The collected data are scored on a variety of indicators of academic quality in the following categories: assessment by academic peers and high school counselors, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation-rate performance, and alumni giving.
