UPDATE 10:48 a.m.: Gas has been shut off and emergency personnel are leaving the scene. The street and ramp will reopen soon.

During construction on Catlett Residence Hall about 10 a.m. Wednesday, a gas line was hit resulting in a gas leak. Catlett Residence Hall is a new building, currently under construction, and is not occupied by students.

University of Iowa Facilities Management and MidAmerican Energy Co. are at the scene working to resolve the problem. The UI Department of Public Safety and the Iowa City Fire Department also are at the scene.

North Madison Street is closed north of the Iowa Memorial Union, and the North Ramp is closed at this time.

MidAmerican and Department of Public Safety officials have determined that no other buildings in the area need to be evacuated at this time.
