The annual “Cancer in Iowa” report issued by the State Health Registry of Iowa, based at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, will be released March 22.

Mary Charlton, assistant professor of epidemiology at the UI College of Public Health, will present the report's findings and discuss its focus on liver cancer.

George Weiner, director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI, president of the board of directors for the Iowa Cancer Consortium, and president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes, will discuss recent advances in research of liver cancers.

Michael Voigt, clinical professor of internal medicine, gastroenterology, and hepatology at the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, will discuss liver cancer as well as the emphasis on early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

In addition to the physicians, a patient affected by liver cancer will be available to offer a personal perspective.

After formal remarks and the Q&A session, the presenters will be available for one-on-one interviews.

Parking: Metered parking is available in front of the building or below in Lot 42. Additional parking is available in the Newton Road Ramp located on Newton Road.

Additional information: Copies of "Cancer in Iowa: 2017" will be available at the conference. Digital versions charts/figures from the report also will be available for reporters. The report includes estimates of cancer diagnoses and deaths in Iowa for 2017 and a special section on liver cancer.
