University of Iowa Health Care staff will begin moving pediatric patients into the new University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The announcement was made Monday by Jean E. Robillard, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine; Kenneth P. Kates, CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics; and Scott Turner, executive director of UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

“Clearly the planning, design, construction, and preparation for moving into the new children’s hospital has been a historic undertaking. We’re excited that children and families soon will be in an environment created with their unique needs in mind,” the three leaders stated in an email to all UI Health Care employees.

The phased move-in comes after hospital leaders received permission from the state fire marshal on Friday, Feb. 17.

The following areas will be part of the Feb. 25 move:

  • Lower Level 2: Imaging and Procedure Center
  • Lower Level 1: Discharge Lobby and Main Pharmacy
  • Level 1: Gerdin Family Lobby
  • Level 2: Dialysis and Infusion Center
  • Level 3: Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PCICU and PICU)
  • Level 6: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Bay 5 only)
  • Level 11: UI Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer Center

Remaining areas of the new children’s hospital will open at a later date. This will allow time to complete device integration and staff training and ensure the remaining areas are ready for patients, families, and employees.

“Our sincerest appreciation goes out to everyone who has worked so hard to make this weekend’s move a reality,” the email concluded. “This could not have been possible without your input, dedication, and commitment to this project—and to each other. Together, we can look forward to opening a truly world-class facility for our pediatric patients and their families.”
