The Provost’s Office of Outreach and Engagement awarded four Theme Semester Supplemental Grants during its spring 2017 application window. The funded projects include: 

  • Being Responsible Online Workshop Series & Online Resources, led by Katie Hassman from the University of Iowa Libraries.
  • Our Writing Lives Online: Course Tuition for High School Students, led by Stephen Lovely from the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio.
  • 30,000 Hands: Information and Training, led by David Supp-Montgomerie from the Department of Communication Studies.
  • IDEAL Assignment Design Institute, led by Matthew Gilchrist from the Department of Rhetoric.

Theme Semester Supplemental grants support community engagement events, activities, research, or educational opportunities related to the Theme Semester program housed in the Office of Outreach and Engagement. The spring 2017 Theme Semester, Our Lives Online, explores topics related to the Internet and technology, including social media, trends in big data, and new and rapidly changing technology. Also awarded was one Micro Grant, which supports outreach and engagement travel, events, and conference attendance that impact community engagement. The funded project is:

  • National DNA Day 2017, led by Bryant McAllister from the Department of Biology.

In addition, the office provides Community Impact Grants to support projects and initiatives across campus that make a significant impact within communities in Iowa. The office supports the university’s strategic goal to engage with Iowa and the world to broaden education, improve health, and enhance economic development. The Office of Outreach and Engagement seeks to foster connections between faculty, staff, students, and communities. In addition to their six featured programs, the office facilitates collaboration among the multitude of outreach and engagement efforts on campus and connect programs with the state of Iowa.
