Efthymia Kapnoula, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from the University of Iowa, has received the 2016 European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCoP) Early Career Publication Award. This award is given for the best article accepted for publication in 2015, while the honoree was a PhD student or within a year of receipt of the PhD.

Kapnoula received this award for her paper with UI professor Bob McMurray, “Training Alters the Resolution of Lexical Interference: Evidence for Plasticity of Competition and Inhibition,” which appeared in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Kapnoula is a postdoctoral researcher at the Basque Center on Cognition, Brain, and Language. Her research is focused on word learning and online processes of speech perception and spoken language comprehension, such as lexical competition, phoneme categorization, and top-down effects in speech perception.
