Day of Remembrance: 25th Anniversary of the UI Campus Shooting will take place on the north side of Old Capitol
Wednesday, October 26, 2016

A brief ceremony, titled Day of Remembrance: 25th Anniversary of the UI Campus Shooting, will take place at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, on the north side of Old Capitol between Jessup and Macbride halls.

The ceremony will remember and honor the victims and survivors of the tragedy that took place on the University of Iowa campus on Nov. 1, 1991. On that day, a disgruntled graduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy shot and killed four people in Van Allen Hall, then made his way to Jessup Hall, where he shot two others—killing one of them—before taking his own life. The second victim from Jessup Hall died in 2008.

The shooting victims were Associate Vice President T. Anne Cleary; Dr. Christoph K. Goertz; Dr. Linhua Shan; Dr. Dwight R. Nicholson; Miya Rodolfo-Sioson; and Professor Robert A. Smith.

The ceremony will include a brief program with remarks by P. Barry Butler, executive vice president and provost, followed by a remembrance from a representative of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. A permanent memorial will be placed on the north side of Old Capitol at a later date.

The rain location will be in Old Capitol.
