Richard Burton, professor in the UI College of Dentistry, has assumed the role of president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). This one-year commitment represents the seventh of eight years of his service with the ABOMS board of directors. 

The mission of ABOMS is to assure public safety and optimal care through the development and maintenance of high standards of certification and re-certification of diplomates in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. 

Kirk Fridrich, professor and department head of oral and maxillofacial surgery at UI hospital dentistry, notes that Burton should be congratulated “on this distinguished professional achievement and for representing the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) in such an exemplary manner.”
