The University of Iowa has begun a formal search for a new assistant vice president and director of public safety. The successful candidate will be required to have extensive experience in law enforcement and a strong understanding of best practices in community policing, crime prevention, emergency planning, and critical-incident response. The university will look for a visionary leader, familiar with the unique nature of university communities.

Rod Lehnertz, UI senior vice president for finance and operations, has appointed Lucy Wiederholt to serve as interim director of public safety during the search process. Wiederholt has served as associate director and UI chief of police since 2010.

“As a 30-year veteran of the university, Director Wiederholt brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the position. She and I will work closely to continue to ensure the safety of the university community during this interim period,” says Lehnertz.

As the chief of police, Wiederholt managed the law enforcement division, which currently has 35 officers who patrol the campus and conduct criminal investigations and threat assessments.

“We have a dedicated and talented team of officers who are committed to creating a safe environment for our students, faculty, and staff, and I’m honored to serve in this capacity,” Wiederholt says.

Wiederholt replaces David Visin, who has returned to his previous position as associate director in charge of Clery compliance, departmental reporting, and support services. Visin was appointed to the interim position following the retirement of Chuck Green in January 2015.
