Foundations in Learning, a UI-spinout business based in the UI Research Park, has received a $900,000 federal Small Business Innovation Research grant from the federal government. This is in addition to $450,000 the company received in a grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2014.

Foundations in Learning has developed a product called Access Code, a new model of learning that helps children who struggle with reading comprehension to improve their skills. The model was co-developed, and the company co-founded, by Carolyn Brown, a research scientist in the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Clinic.
