University of Iowa on track to name new president in September
Thursday, July 2, 2015

The firm handling the University of Iowa’s search for a new president says 11 candidates have submitted applications, 16 have said they will apply, and 45 are seriously considering applying. The firm provided an update July 2 during a telephonic meeting of the Presidential Search and Screen Committee chaired by Jean Robillard, UI vice president for medical affairs.

“A pool of that number is quite encouraging,” said Robillard.

Robillard says public searches are difficult because many candidates want to remain confidential, but he says the committee will bring the finalists to campus. “We have a process, and we are following that process,” Robillard says.

Laurie Wilder, president of Parker Executive Search, told the committee the strongest candidates often wait until the last minute to apply. “The search isn’t over until it’s over, so continue to bring us names,” Wilder says. The position closes July 31.

So far the search firm has received 115 nominations; many of those from UI faculty, staff, and administration. Wilder says they have contacted presidents, vice presidents, provosts, chancellors, and deans at a variety of universities—both AAU and smaller private institutions.  She says they’re also reaching out to a small number of people form outside of academia. She expects the position to attract two or three non-traditional candidates with “stellar careers in a corporate or government environment” who also have some level of connection to higher education.

Wilder says potential applicants are asking about the university’s budget and relationship with the Board of Regents and state leaders. “We tell candidates this campus is hungry for a new president, wants to move forward, and is not satisfied with status quo,” she says.

At the conclusion of the meeting Robillard announced next steps:

  • July 30: The committee will hold a telephonic meeting from noon to 1 p.m.
  • Aug. 4: The committee will meet on campus from 3 to 5 p.m.; this will include a closed session to discuss the applicants.
  • Aug. 11-12: The committee will host “airport interviews” in Chicago.
  • Aug. 31-Sept. 3: Finalists will visit campus.
  • Sept. 4: The candidates will meet with the Board of Regents.
