March 9 event provides an excellent opportunity to speak with experts
Friday, March 6, 2015

On Monday, March 9, UI undergraduate and graduate students will have an opportunity to learn about the numerous career opportunities being created by personalized genomic medicine in the fields of bioinformatics and big data management.

The event is free, but due to limited space, registration is encouraged here.

The career information event, Personalized Genomic Medicine: Careers in Bioinformatics and Big Data Information Session, is hosted by the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics (IIHG) and will run from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in the second floor Conference Center (2520D) of the University Capitol Centre (UCC).

The program will include a panel discussion with experts in bioinformatics, software development, systems administration, clinical informatics, and industry who will discuss their roles in the field of personalized genomic medicine. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet with individual panelists during informal breakout sessions. Light refreshments will be served.

This is the second year the IIHG has hosted the program, and Institute leaders stress the importance of providing career information sessions for students.

"The program provides students an excellent opportunity to speak to individuals from various backgrounds,” says Colleen Campbell, IIHG assistant director. “In speaking about their career paths, the panelists address how their successes and challenges led them to the decision to pursue their current field of work.”

Ethan Bahl, a UI undergraduate who attended the information session last year, explains the value of the program.

"I found last year’s session to be very informative," he says. "Getting perspectives from a variety of professionals with different backgrounds demonstrated the power of informatics and the possibilities available with current technology, particularly in the biological sciences."

The event is free, but due to limited space, registration is encouraged. For more information and to register, visit the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics website.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the IIHG in advance at 319-335-3578 or iihg@uiowa.edu.
