Floyd R. and Judith E. Domer, of Asheville, North Carolina, have established a $1 million bequest for the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy that will enhance an existing scholarship fund and create a new lectureship fund.

This bequest will increase the Floyd R. and Judith E. Domer Scholarship Fund—which the couple established in 2013 for students in the UI College of Pharmacy—and also will create the Floyd R. and Judith E. Domer Lectureship Fund.

Jeff Reist, RPh ParmD Clinical Pharmacist, with Tara Kilburg, a former graduate student.

“Through our lectureship, we can bring leaders from the various fields of pharmacy to campus to inspire and inform students,” says Floyd Domer. “We also hope that the recipients of our scholarship will be able to start their postgraduate lives with a smaller burden of debt.”

Floyd Domer is a UI graduate who received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 1954 and his Master of Science degree in pharmacology in 1956. He went on to earn a doctorate degree in pharmacology from Tulane University in 1959 and is a professor emeritus of the Department of Pharmacology at the Tulane University School of Medicine.

Judith Domer received her Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Tusculum College in 1961 and her doctoral degree in microbiology and immunology from Tulane University in 1966. She served on the faculty in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Tulane Medical School until 1997 and then became the dean of graduate studies and research at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. Floyd Domer retired from Tulane University at that time and was adjunct faculty in the Department of Biology at Appalachian State University. Both of the Domers retired in 2004.

“The College of Pharmacy family is deeply moved by the generous gift provided by Drs. Floyd and Judith Domer,” says Donald E. Letendre, dean of the UI College of Pharmacy. “Their thoughtful investment will have a profound impact on the lives of our students by easing the substantial burden of their educational costs. Moreover, the Domer Lectureship Fund will serve to intellectually enrich our entire college community. We are so grateful to the Domers for their visionary support.”
