DeGowin Blood Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics seeks eligible donors
Wednesday, December 17, 2014

The DeGowin Blood Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is encouraging those who are eligible to donate blood this holiday season.

Over the holidays and winter, blood donations tend to decrease while the need for blood, especially type O, increases. Donating whole blood takes about 45 to 60 minutes and can help up to two patients. All blood collected by the DeGowin Blood Center is used to help patients being treated at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics or UI Children’s Hospital.

A person is generally eligible to donate if they are 17 years of age or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, have been symptom free of colds or flu for five days, and pass a brief mini-physical and medical history inquiry.

To encourage blood donations over the winter, the DeGowin Blood Center is giving away black and gold striped stocking hats to all successful donors through January 17. In addition, free parking is also available for donors who come to the Blood Center in the hospital.

The DeGowin Blood Center is open Monday through Friday for donations. In addition, a variety of blood drives are offered throughout the community. Blood donors are encouraged to call 319-356-2058 or visit The DeGowin Blood Center website to learn more and schedule an appointment.
