Winning photos featured along with events Nov. 17-21 on UI campus

The University of Iowa will celebrate International Education Week Nov. 17-21 with several events and activities, including a public ceremony to honor 2014 International Impact Award recipients Roger Thurow, a UI journalism alumnus, and Selma Jeronimo, a physician who has worked closely with UI medical faculty and students.

UI President Sally Mason and Associate Provost and Dean of International Programs Downing Thomas will present the awards to Thurow and Jeronimo at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at FilmScene in downtown Iowa City. Following the presentation will be a WorldCanvass program on “The Tenacious Cycle of Poverty, Hunger, and Disease.”

Thurow covered a host of momentous international events while working for the Wall Street Journal, including the emergence of Nelson Mandela from prison, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the war in former Yugoslavia. After three decades as a journalist, he turned his energies toward speaking out and writing on nutrition and hunger issues.

Jeronimo’s research involves work in the neighborhoods and homes of low-income populations, and she provides free medical consultation and care as a part of her studies. She has partnered with UI colleagues in numerous high-level, grant-funded research projects investigating endemic but curable tropical diseases that affect thousands of her fellow Brazilians.

As part of International Education Week, UI study abroad and international students are able to share their reflections and overseas experiences through an annual photo contest. This year’s winning photos took viewers on a journey through the mountains of Spain, the glaciers of Chile, the skies of Nepal, and beyond, while also revealing striking views of the UI campus through the eyes of international students.
