Media advisory: National Weather Service director to visit Iowa Flood Center, UI

Officials with the Iowa Flood Center at the University of Iowa announce a visit by National Weather Service Director Louis W. Uccellini and members of his staff. Leaders of the Iowa Flood Center (IFC) and National Weather Service (NWS) will discuss ways the organizations can partner to provide better service for Iowa and the nation.

“This is an important visit for both organizations,” says Iowa Flood Center Director Witold Krajewski. “It’s an opportunity for us to learn about the NWS’ vision for the future, for NWS staff to see IFC’s novel tools first-hand, and to explore how we might work together to advance our respective missions.”

The public, meteorologists, and other media representatives are invited to attend Uccellini’s presentation on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 10:30 a.m. “Building a Weather-Ready Nation: Advancing the NWS Hydrology Program.” He will describe how the NWS is leading the charge to make communities ready, responsive, and resilient to hazardous weather.

Following Uccellini’s appearance, Don Cline, acting director NWS Office of Hydrologic Development, will present “Environmental Intelligence: Water 1.0 — The National Water Center and the Transformation of NOAA’s Water Prediction Services.”

After the presentations, Uccellini and Cline will take questions.

BACKGROUND: The IFC is part of IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, a unit of the UI’s College of Engineering. The IFC was established in 2009 and is the first and only research center in the U.S. devoted solely to floods-related research and education. IFC researchers and students work alongside federal, state, and local partners to improve flood monitoring and prediction in Iowa.
