When it comes to combating obesity, it often seems as if there are as many ideas as junk foods. David Frisvold, assistant professor of economics, has studied a number of public policy initiatives aimed at reducing obesity and has found mixed results.

He will share some insights on how best to align policies with the root causes of obesity in an effort to improve public health on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at noon in the Iowa Theater, Iowa Memorial Union. His presentation, “Public Policy and Personal Health: Effective tools for combating obesity,” continues the University of Iowa’s popular Hawkeye Lunch and Learn series. Guests are invited to bring their lunches—desserts and drinks will be provided. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. RSVP online.

The rate of obesity has been increasing over the last few decades, with more than 1 in 3 adults and more than 1 in 5 adolescents now considered obese.

Frisvold’s research has focused on the economic effectiveness of public policies aimed at reducing those rates and has found that addressing the problem in childhood is an important tactic in reducing overall obesity rates.

In addition, comprehensive policies and programs that support and encourage increased physical activity and the consumption of nutritious foods are more effective than policies that impose taxes or other financial penalties on consumption of high-sugar or high-fat foods.

“Obesity is more than just a personal health issue or ‘lifestyle choice,’” Frisvold says. “Given the impact on our health care system, with costs at $257 billion per year and rising, it’s clear there is a role for public policy in combating this epidemic. We need to ensure that the policies we enact will actually address the underlying causes of obesity.”

The Hawkeye Lunch and Learn series offers monthly events in Des Moines and Iowa City designed to connect Iowa communities, university faculty, and government and industry leaders. The Provost’s Office of Outreach and Engagement sponsors the series. Upcoming events in Iowa City include:

  • Dec. 10: Chuck Connerly, professor and director, School of Urban and Regional Planning; Nick Benson, Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, contact the Office of the Provost in advance at 319-335-3565.
