Faculty—

Dr. Trishul Allareddy, associate professor in the department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, has been awarded the Scientific Reviewer Award from the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) for his work in reviewing papers for the radiology section of Quad O.

A project team led by Benjamin Darbro, director of the Shivanand R. Patil Cytogenetics and Molecular Laboratory and an assistant professor of pediatrics at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, has won the inaugural Appistry Pipeline Challenge for developing and executing a pipeline designed to reduce the costs and turnaround times associated with next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based genomics testing. The team has won a complete hardware and software system from Appistry valued at approximately $70,000. More information is available here.

Staff—

Dr. Saulo Sousa Melo, a second-year radiology resident in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, has been awarded the 2014 Radiology Centennial Scholarship by the AAOMR.

The scholarship award, which includes a certificate and a check for $5,000, recognized the centennial year of the discovery of x-rays by German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen in 1915. The scholarship is given to oral and maxillofacial radiology graduate students who are academically outstanding and who will potentially have continued achievement in their professional careers.

Debora L. Liddell, departmental executive officer in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies at the UI’s College of Education, was named editor-elect of the Journal of College Student Development.

Liddell begins her term as editor August 2015.

Now in its 55th year, JCSD is published eight times annually, fielding over 400 manuscript submissions a year. The acceptance rate is five percent.

The JCSD is the official journal of the American College Personnel Association and is published by The Johns Hopkins University Press.

Students—

Heather Draxl, a graduate student in Language, Literacy and Culture, was named a UI Obermann Center HASTAC Scholar for 2014-2015.

In addition, the appointment includes a $500 stipend to be used for research expenses.

HASTAC, the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory, is designed for graduate students with interests and expertise in digital media, 21st-century higher education, digital humanities, and technology in the arts, humanities, and sciences.

As an Obermann HASTAC Scholar, Draxl will use social media and other forms of digital communication to help the Obermann Center share information about events and promote the Iowa Humanities Festival on April 11, 2015, in Des Moines.

Dr. Axel Ruprecht, professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, presented a master class titled, "Radiologic Interpretation," at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Sept. 24-27 in Orlando, Florida.
