Through an agreement with the Association of American Universities, the University of Iowa Office of Research and Economic Development is making available to the campus community free live and on-demand streaming of the upcoming TEDMED 2014 talks.

TEDMED 2014 will be recorded during two simultaneous live events Sept. 10-12 (at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco) and feature more than 80 talks from transformative scientists, innovators, artists, athletes, and others seeking to create a healthier world.

UI faculty, staff, and students may stream the talks to their desktops, laptops, tablets, or mobile devices live Sept. 10-12 or watch recorded videos on-demand until Sept. 16. They must pre-register to watch by visiting www.tedmed.com/tedmedlive2014registration?ic=TMLicUI14 (the link should automatically insert your special Invitation Code RegistrationTMLicUI14 and bypass the vetting process; once the screen appears, just hit “continue”).

Among the scheduled speakers are:

  • Diana Nyad. This marathon swimmer will share lessons of her world record-setting solo 110-mile swim from Cuba to Miami at age 64.
  • Patricia Horoho. First woman and first nurse to serve as the Army Surgeon General.
  • Kayt Sukel. Journalist and science writer, Sukel will share insights into the neuroscience of risk-taking and how play during childhood and adulthood impacts the way we make decisions as adults.
  • Foteini Agrafioti. A biometric and personal security engineer, Agrafioti will share how your EKG and emissions from your ear may be an alternate kind of fingerprint for you.
  • Marc Abrahams. Editor of the science humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research, Abrahams will share laughter and thought-provoking stories behind some of the winners of the Nobel Prize Ceremony.
  • Kitra Cahana. One of National Geographic’s youngest photographers, Cahana will tell a moving and inspiring story of a medical catastrophe that turned into an unexpected journey into realms of spirituality and imagination.
  • Thomas Goetz. Former executive editor of WIRED, Goetz will share insights into the new metrics for measuring our health.
