Faculty—
Er-Wei Bai, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named departmental executive officer, effective July 1, in the UI College of Engineering.
Bai received a BS degree in physics in 1977 from Fudan University, an ME degree in electrical engineering and computer science in 1982 from Shanghai Jiaotong University, and a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering in 1987 from the University of California-Berkeley.
Staff—
Pat Mason-Browne, senior associate director in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Programs and Student Development, is the inaugural winner of the National Academic Advising Association's (NACADA) Region 6 Service Award.
The award annually recognizes the importance of volunteer service to Region 6 by a NACADA member through outstanding service to the organization and the region.
Mason-Browne will receive a plaque and a one-year NACADA membership, and will be honored at an awards ceremony held during NACADA's Region Conference in spring 2015.
Students—
Kaitlin Hoogeveen and Courtney Mann, third-year students at the College of Dentistry, were awarded $5,000 scholarships from The Iowa Dental Foundation in May.
Three graduate students from the University of Iowa College of Nursing’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/Doctor of Nursing Practice program were recently elected to the Iowa Chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
Margaret Burchianti was elected president; David Hatfield was named chapter secretary; and Rebecca Devine will serve as member at large.

Abstracts by associate professor Ellen Cram, assistant dean of undergraduate programs, along with Jennifer Carpe, nurse manager at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and Karina Schnieders, staff nurse at UI Hospitals and Clinics, have been accepted for a joint podium presentation at the Portland Model DEU Conference this summer.
Schnieders is the author of "Rewards and Challenges of a Clinical Instructor for the Dedicated Education Unit"; Carpe and fellow nurse Tammy Sebolt wrote “Lessons from a DEU Practice/Academic Partnership”; and Cram penned "Implementing and Measuring the DEU Model in a Unionized Academic Medical Center."
All three will present their respective abstracts at the Portland Model DEU: A Journey to Future Possibilities National Conference, which will be held July 19, in Portland, Oregon.

A book, coauthored by Cornelia Mutel, senior science writer at IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, has been published by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Press. Titled Hans Albert Einstein: His Life as a Pioneering Engineer, the biography describes one man's search to understand how rivers behave, as well as his relationships with his wives and children and his famous father—Albert Einstein. Alumna—
A Transplanted Chicago: Race, Place and the Press in Iowa City, a book written by Robert E. Gutsche, Jr. (Ph.D., Mass Communications, 2012) was published by McFarland Publishers in May. The scholarly and journalistic work examines a decades-old movement of African Americans from inner-city Chicago to a largely white Iowa.
Gutsche is an assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University in Miami, Florida.
