The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at the University of Iowa has named a scholar in the arts and humanities as its newest faculty fellow.

David Gier is a professor and director of the UI School of Music. He teaches trombone and brass chamber music and performs with the Iowa Brass Quintet.

Gier is the third person to be selected for the Administrative Research Fellows Program, now in its second year. The first fellows were Meenakshi Gigi Durham, professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Thomas Scholz, a doctor and pediatrics professor in the Carver College of Medicine.

The program was created to give faculty an insider’s look into the UI’s research enterprise. The fellows will work closely with research office leaders on initiatives associated with research administration, research development and economic development and engagement. They also will participate as peers in meetings of the research office senior staff, the UI Research Council, and other governance groups.

“We are delighted David is joining our office as a faculty fellow,” says Dan Reed, the UI's vice president for research and economic development. “The first year of the fellowship program exceeded our expectations in bringing strong faculty perspectives to our office. We are confident David will complement our existing fellows and bring deep insights to the arts and humanities.”

Gier said he’s thrilled to represent the arts and humanities at OVPR&ED, and looks forward to “extending what I have learned in service to the (School of Music) to an even greater number of faculty and students.”

He adds, “The research enterprise at Iowa extends to every corner of this campus, and I expect that I will learn a tremendous amount about innovation and the creative process as I establish new relationships with colleagues in engineering, the physical sciences, medicine, and so on. “

Gier is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale University, where he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1992.
