The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by Kantorei and the University Choir at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

Both ensembles will be led by Timothy Stalter, conductor and director of choral activities in the UI School of Music.

The University Choir program will feature:

  • Christus factus est by Anton Bruckner
  • Motet: Singet dem Herr nein neues Lied by Hugo Distler
  • La Nuit by Reynaldo Hahn
  • Water Night by Eric Whitacre
  • Dance, Dance my Heart by Emma Lou Diemer
  • Loveliest of Trees by James Q. Mulholland
  • Festina Lente by René Eespere
  • Love Lost: A cycle of four satirical poems on love by Paul Sjolund
  • It Was a Lover and His Lass by John Rutter

Kantorei will perform:

  • Let Us All Rejoice in the Lord by Gabriel Jackson
  • Ave Regina by Cecilia McDowall
  • O vera digna hostia by Tarik O’Regan
  • Three Lieder, Op. 42 by Johannes Brahms
  • Altri canti di Marteby Claudio Monteverdi (Jordan Pohlmann, bass soloist)
  • Three French Choruses from The Larkby Leonard Bernstein (Kate MacRae, soprano soloist; Emily Guthe, alto soloist)

Kantorei is the premier choral ensemble of the university, consisting of about 30 graduate students. University Choir is a select, advanced choir of 50 to 60 singers, primarily undergraduate students.

Stalter conducts the premier choral ensemble, Kantorei, and the University Choir; teaches graduate advanced conducting; and oversees the graduate program in choral conducting and pedagogy. He is particularly interested in researching issues relating to the teaching of conducting to undergraduate and graduate students, contemporary British choral music, and historical musical performance. He is a frequent guest clinician in the United States and is an active member with the American Choral Directors Association.

In addition to conducting and teaching choral music, Stalter is active as a tenor soloist in the United States and abroad, specializing in music of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
