The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the UI Symphony Band, conducted by Mark Heidel, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in the Iowa Memorial Union Ballroom on the UI campus.

The program will include:

• Saisei Fanfare by Brett William Dietz
• Huntingtower Ballad by Ottorino Respighi (Carl Rowles, guest conductor)
• Symphony No. 3 ("Shaker Life") by Dan Welcher
• Sonoran Desert Holiday by Ron Nelson (Steven Riley, guest conductor)
• Marche Militaire Francaise from Suite Algerienne by Camille Saint-Saens (transcribed by Mayhew Lake)

The Symphony Band, which is filled by audition, is open to all UI students. In addition to campus concerts, the Symphony Band performs, on occasion, at state and national conventions.

Heidel is director of bands and associate professor in the School of Music. In addition to conducting the Symphony Band, he teaches graduate courses in conducting and wind band literature, guides the graduate band conducting program, and oversees the UI band program.

Ensembles under Heidel’s direction have performed at state, regional, and national conferences including those of the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, Wisconsin Music Educators Association, Illinois Music Educators Association, National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter, and Iowa Bandmasters Association. He has also led concert tours to Ireland and England as well as throughout the Midwest.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
