The performing arts component of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Project Art will present a performance by cellist Nicholas Canellakis, pianist Michael Brown, and bassist Mark Bernat at noon Monday, April 28, in the atrium of the John Colloton Pavilion at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The performance is free and open to the public.

The program will include works from Handel, Janacek, Copland, Shostakovich, and a traditional Bulgarian piece arranged by Canellakis.

Canellakis is an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS), having been a member of the society's coveted CMS Two program from 2009 to 2012. He is a frequent guest artist at Bargemusic in New York City, and has performed in some of the country's most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, the Kimmel Center, and Disney Hall, among many others.

The New York Times has declared Brown “a young piano visionary,” praising him for “a magnificent performance” and a “powerful technique and a vivid imagination.” He is first prize winner of the 2010 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. As winner of the Juilliard Concerto Competition, Brown performed with the Juilliard Orchestra under New York Philharmonic Music Director Alan Gilbert, and he performed a recital at Alice Tully Hall as winner of Juilliard’s 2012 William Petschek Piano Recital Award.

While still in his 20's, Bernat gave recitals at London's Purcell Room and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. As the youngest member of the Israel Philharmonic, Bernat worked with notable conductors such as Zubin Mehta and Leonard Bernstein. He also joined the Jerusalem Symphony as principal bassist under the direction of Lukas Foss.

The performing arts component of Project Art was created to offer diversion and stimulation through music, dance, and theater. Project Art schedules numerous performances each year; many Project Art performances take place during the noon hour to attract staff and visitors during lunch breaks.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to attend this concert, call Project Art in advance at 319-384-8068.
