The University of Iowa College of Law’s patent moot court team took first place at the national finals of the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Patent Law Moot Court competition April 23-25 in Washington, D.C.

Patently successful

Last April, we wrote about the College of Law’s intellectual property moot court teams—how they are becoming nationally prominent in law’s fastest growing field. Revisit the article.

Students in the competition compete in brief writing and oral advocacy on issues in trademark and unfair competition law. The UI team was awarded the AIPLA Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Award of $2,000.

The UI team beat Suffolk University in the finals, and also succeeded teams from Columbia University, the University of Washington, the University of Utah, the University of Houston, and Michigan State University, among others. Iowa’s team won the Midwest regional competition in Chicago in March.

The winning team includes third-year law student Josh Galgano of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and second-year law student Michelle Wallace of Johnston, Iowa; Christina Bohannan, UI Professor and Lauridsen Family Fellow in Law (coach); Damon Andrews, UI College of Law alumnus (assistant coach); and Jason Rantanen, UI associate professor of law (assisting faculty).

Participation in this competition is part of the College of Law’s Intellectual Property Advocacy course, spearheaded by Bohannan. The course integrates teaching of substantive intellectual property law with development of oral and written advocacy skills in the intellectual property field.
