Come enjoy a free public recital by renowned New York musicians in the Senate Chamber of the University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum at 7 p.m. Monday, April 28.

Cellist Nicholas Canellakis, pianist Michael Brown, and guest bassist Mark Bernat will perform Handel's Sonata for Two Cellos and Keyboard, Janacek's “Pohadka” for Cello and Piano, Copland's “Piano Variations,” Shostakovich's Sonata for Cello and Piano and the Bulgarian traditional dance “Daichovo Horo,” arranged by Canellakis.

Canellakis is an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, having been a member of the society's coveted CMS Two program from 2009 to 2012. He is a frequent guest artist at Bargemusic in New York City and has performed in some of the country's most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, the Kimmel Center and Disney Hall. He has participated in the festivals of Santa Fe, Ravinia, Music@Menlo, Mecklenburg, Moab, Bridgehampton, Sarasota, Verbier, Aspen and Music from Angel Fire.

The New York Times has declared Michael Brown “a young piano visionary,” praising him for “a magnificent performance” and a “powerful technique and a vivid imagination.” He won the 2010 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition and the Juilliard’s 2012 William Petschek Piano Recital Award. In addition, he is a composer who often interweaves the classics with contemporary works, including his own compositions. He has appeared on four continents and in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2013, he spent his third summer as a participating artist at Marlboro Music.

While still in his 20s, Bernat gave recitals at London's Purcell Room and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. As the youngest member of the Israel Philharmonic, Bernat worked with notable conductors such as Zubin Mehta and Leonard Bernstein. He also joined the Jerusalem Symphony as principal bassist under the direction of Lukas Foss. Bernat is the performing arts coordinator for UI Hospitals and Clinics’ Project Art Program.
