UI student facilitators available for interview

WHAT: “Black Girls Do Science,” a one-day camp for girls in grades 4-8 in which the girls do hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activities led by current multicultural students, faculty and staff.

WHERE: 2nd Floor Lobby, Southeast Entrance, Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences, corner of Washington and Capitol streets, Iowa City.

WHEN: From 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 12.

WHO: Student facilitators for the program include:

  • Bryne Berry, graduate student, mechanical engineering, Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Megan Osayande, senior, civil engineering, Chicago, Ill.
  • Adam Bailin, senior, biochemistry, Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Tanzeh Khan, senior, biomedical engineering, Clear Lake, Iowa.
  • Victoria Henry, graduate student, chemical engineering, St. Croix, U.S Virgin Islands.
  • Ruaa Elkhair, senior, psychology, Iowa City, Iowa.
  • Eboni Jones, second-year student, Medicine MD, Manhattan, N.Y.
  • Taryn Richardson, graduate student, Iowa City, Iowa.

WHY: Black women only make up about two percent of U.S. scientists and engineers. This program is about empowerment and providing a starting point for young Black girls by showing them STEM field opportunities where they can see themselves as future scientists and engineers. However, the event is open to all.

MORE: The event is planned and conducted by current engineering students who developed the idea last year and have made it into an annual event.

Activities will include making liquid nitrogen ice cream, lip gloss and body lotion, as well as doing some introductory computer coding.
