University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduate T. Geronimo Johnson and Writers’ Workshop alumnus/faculty member James Galvin will present a free reading at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

Galvin has published seven books of poems, most recently As Is (Copper Canyon Press, 2009). His Resurrection Update was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award, the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, and the Poet's Prize. His second book was a National Poetry Series winner. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed prose book The Meadow, and a novel, Fencing the Sky. His honors include a Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Foundation Award, a Lannan Literary Award, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, The Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Born in New Orleans, Johnson has taught writing and held fellowships—including a Stegner Fellowship and an Iowa Arts Fellowship—at Arizona State University, the UI, the University of California-Berkeley, and Stanford University. He has been a visiting writer at Western Michigan University, and is the founding director of the U.C. Berkeley Summer Creative Writing Program. His first book, Hold It ‘Til It Hurts, was published in 2012. His writing has appeared in Best New American Voices, The Indiana Review, The LA Review, and Illuminations, among others.
