Former Clinton budget advisor and co-founder of the Congressional Budget Office Alice Rivlin will discuss health care reform and affordability in a lecture at the University of Iowa on Monday, April 28.

“Can We Have Better Health at Affordable Cost” is the Howard Bowen Lecture sponsored by the Tippie College of Business and begins at 2 p.m. in the Iowa Theater in the Iowa Memorial Union. Admission is free and open to the public.

Rivlin is currently director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform, and the Leonard D. Schaeffer chair in health policy studies and a senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution. She is also a visiting professor at the Public Policy Institute of Georgetown University. In 2010 President Barack Obama appointed Rivlin to the Simpson-Bowles Commission on the federal budget. She also co-chaired, with former Sen. Pete Domenici, the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Debt Reduction Task Force.

An expert on fiscal and monetary policy, social policy, and urban issues, Rivlin served as the vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board from 1996 to 1999. She was director of the White House Office of Management and Budget from 1994 to 1996, helping to transform a large budget deficit into substantial surpluses by the end of the decade.

She founded the Congressional Budget Office in 1975 and served as its director until 1983, creating an independent agency that continues to provide high-quality, nonpartisan analysis to Congress as it works on spending and revenue legislation.
