Workers endure cold winter nights to keep Hancher construction on schedule
Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Iowa City has not been immune to the cold wave of early 2014. Frigid temperatures have dominated the dark months of the calendar. But Mother Nature's lack of cooperation isn't slowing the Mortenson Construction crew working on Hancher. Progress is visible, along with the breath of workers toiling through the night.

Over the past few months, passersby were able to watch Hancher come out of the excavation site as 24-inch-thick concrete walls extended more than 100 feet vertically. On the inside, the new stage and hall took shape as structural steel for the first level was erected. The next phase involves the steel that will support the parterre level and balconies.

If you want to see an updated view of the construction site, Mortenson provides a webcam page that updates every 15 minutes. But be sure to click on the thumbnails below, which spotlight the work being done in the dark.
