Brenda Hillman

Poet Brenda Hillman, alumna of the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, will present a free reading at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House.

Hillman has published numerous collections of poetry: White Dress (1985), Fortress (1989), Death Tractates (1992), Bright Existence (1993), Loose Sugar (1997), Cascadia (2001), Pieces of Air in the Epic (2005), Practical Water (2009, for which she won the LA Times Book Award for Poetry), and Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire (2013), which was longlisted for the 2013 National Book Award for Poetry. She also has published three chapbooks: Coffee, 3 A.M. (1982); Autumn Sojourn (1995); and The Firecage (2000).

Of her most recent collection of poetry, Dean Rader wrote, “Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire is a profoundly humane work. In language that moves from the chatty to the experimental to the heightened to the rhetorical, Hillman shows us once again that poetry is itself a tireless worker, always already on our behalf.”
