A new University of Iowa maps website— maps.uiowa.edu—promises to make finding your way around campus a lot easier.

Developed by Information Technology Services (ITS) with support from Facilities Management and University Communication and Marketing, the site includes an interactive map, details on every campus building, a list of study spaces with real-time info on computer availability, and other new features.

“Navigating the map will feel familiar to anyone who’s used to modern map sites and apps,” says Mark Ahrens, senior application developer with the ITS web services group. “It highlights all campus buildings, streets, and major walking routes, as well as parking and green space.”

With a mobile-friendly design and space to add custom campus tour info, the site is a resource for visitors, students, faculty, and staff alike. It includes links to other sites that offer additional details on classrooms, building accessibility, construction projects, public art, and more.

The site will expand to include more information on buildings and outdoor areas. Developers hope to add locations for emergency phones, vending machines, artwork, and even notable trees. Eventually, the site may provide plans for building interiors.

The official debut of the maps site coincides with the launch of a new UI home page. Together, the projects mark major upgrades to the university’s top-level web presence.

“Most new UI websites are designed to work across devices, integrate content from multiple databases, and make maintenance quicker and easier,” Ahrens says. “They’re much more dynamic and functional than the sites they replace.”
