The University of Iowa will honor December 2013 graduates during a series of commencement ceremonies and other events, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21.

Fall degree applicants include, among undergraduates, 795 from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (100 of whom are students getting their elementary education program completion certificate through the College of Education), 182 from the College of Business, and 62 from the College of Engineering. Among professional and graduate students, they include 294 from the Graduate College, 19 from the College of Law, 150 from the College of Nursing, 20 from the University College, and 83 from the Tippie School of Management with an MBA.

Video for many of the commencement ceremonies will be streamed live online at now.uiowa.edu. Events also will be broadcast on UITV.

College of Education teacher education convocation

Friday, Dec. 20, 1 p.m. Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge

Nicholas Colangelo, College of Education dean, will welcome graduates and guests. Speakers will include UI student Zach Wahls; William Coghill Behrends, professional development coordinator for the college's Teacher-Leader Center, and graduate Abby Noelck.

Tippie College of Business School of Management MBA graduation celebration

Friday, Dec. 20, 4:30 p.m. Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center

Featured speaker will be Marie Ziegler, vice president and deputy financial officer for Deere & Company. Tippie College of Business Dean Sarah Fisher Gardial will confer the degrees.

Graduate College commencement

Friday, Dec. 20, 7 p.m. Carver Hawkeye Arena

John Keller, associate provost for graduate education and Graduate College dean, will offer a brief introduction. UI President Sally Mason will confer the degrees, while Robert Downer, a member of the Iowa Board of Regents, and Hannah Walsh, a UI junior and member of the Iowa Board of Regents, will attend as a special guest.

Undergraduate commencement ceremony

This includes students from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Tippie College of Business, University College, and the Bachelor of Science degree candidates in the Carver College of Medicine.

Saturday, Dec. 21, 9 a.m. Carver Hawkeye Arena

Sarah Fisher Gardial, dean of the Tippie College of Business, and Joe Kearney, associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will recommend degrees for conferral to UI President Sally Mason. Business graduate Jordan Brauns will be the student speaker.

College of Nursing commencement

Saturday, Dec. 21, 10 a.m. Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge

College of Nursing dean Rita Frantz will lead the ceremonies, while Daniel Reed, UI vice president for research and economic development, will confer degrees. Nursing student Emily Christiansen will serve as grand marshal; graduates Kimberly Enstad and Kurt Alexander will speak.

College of Engineering commencement

Saturday, Dec. 21, noon, Macbride Hall Auditorium

College of Engineering dean Alec Scranton will lead the event; UI Provost Barry Butler will confer the degrees. Kelly Ortberg, a 1982 graduate who today serves as CEO and president of Rockwell Collins, will give the charge to the graduates and be inducted into the college’s Distinguished Engineering Alumni Academy.

Family and friends unable to attend the December ceremonies have several options for watching graduates participate.

The Graduate College, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences/Tippie College of Business, College of Nursing, and College of Engineering ceremonies will be streamed live on the web at now.uiowa.edu. They’ll also be posted on the university’s YouTube channel within 24 hours.

Ceremonies at Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be broadcast live for area audiences via UITV (channel info here). Ceremonies will be rebroadcast on UITV within 24 hours. UITV also offers DVD copies of previous commencement ceremonies.

Find complete info for graduates and guests on the Office of the Registrar website. Commencement events are open to the public, but traffic near facilities—particularly Carver-Hawkeye Arena—may be heavy. Doors open an hour prior to start time.

Carver-Hawkeye guests with disabilities or limited mobility can park in Lot 46 adjacent to the arena, provided they have state-issued disabled parking permits. Guests with limited mobility can access the Feller Club Room with up to two companions or view the ceremony from the upper concourse level.
