Iowa Writers’ Workshop alumni Kate Christiansen and D.A. Powell will give a free reading at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Frank Conroy Reading Room of the Glenn Schaeffer Library, adjacent to the Dey House on the University of Iowa campus.

Christiansen is the author of six novels, including The Great Man, winner of the 2008 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction. Her most recent book, Blue Plate Special: An Autobiography of My Appetites, was published in July by Doubleday.

Raised in California and Arizona, Christiansen resides in Portland, Maine where she writes food and drink columns for The Wall Street Journal and Medium.com. She is presently collaborating with Boston chef Barbara Lynch on her memoir.

Powell is the recipient of the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry for his collection Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys. Born in Georgia, Powell earned an Master of Arts from Sonoma State University where he currently teaches.

He is known for his syntactically inventive style, and has been awarded the Lyric Poetry Award from the Poetry Society of America, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Paul Engle Fellowship from the James Michener Foundation. His poems have been featured in the Norton anthology American Hybrid (2009) and Best American Poetry (2008).
