The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free concert by the University Band and Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Iowa Memorial Union Ballroom.

The University Band, conducted by MA candidate Steven Riley, will feature the following selections:

  • Lords of Greenwich by Robert Sheldon (Kevin Kessler, guest conductor)
  • Cajun Folk Songs by Frank Ticheli (Carl Rowles, guest conductor)
  • The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre (Lieza Hansen, piano)
  • Fate of the Gods by Steven Reineke
  • Under the Double Eagle March by Josef Franz Wagner

The Concert Band, conducted by Kevin Kastens, UI School of Music professor and associate director of bands, will perform:

  • With Heart and Voice by David R. Gillingham (Kevin Kessler, guest conductor)
  • Voci Sacre by Luigi Zaninelli (Steven Riley, guest conductor)
  • Con-Tse-To by Gregory Fritze (Kenneth Tse, alto saxophone)
  • A Step Ahead by Harry L. Alford

Prior to attending the University of Iowa, Riley was director of bands at Johnsburg High School in Johnsburg, Ill. During his time in Johnsburg his ensembles performed in various music festivals, performed with guest artists, and toured internationally in the Bahamas. Riley is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education. As an undergraduate, he studied clarinet with Professor J. David Harris and performed with the Marching Illini, Symphonic Band I, and the Wind Symphony.

Kastens is associate director of bands and director of the Hawkeye Marching Band. As a professor in the School of Music, he teaches marching band techniques, band arranging, and conducts the Concert Band.

Prior to his appointment at Iowa in July 1998, Kastens served for five years as the associate director of bands at the University of Missouri-Columbia and for six years as assistant director of bands at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. Kastens has had numerous articles published on various topics of instrumental music education, as well as musical works published by BRS Music and C.L. Barnhouse. He has served as a conductor/clinician for the Bands of America Summer National Workshops, the Smith-Walbridge Drum Major Clinics, and is a leader in the field of computer-assisted marching band drill design.
