The University of Iowa School of Music will present a performance by Johnson County Landmark, a jazz orchestra under the direction of School of Music professor John Rapson, at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, in the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City.

The performance is titled “Looking for America: Blues and Politics,” and is part of the UI Series on Arts and Rights. Michael Jarvey will serve as guest organist. The program will feature:

Fables of Faubus by Charles Mingus, arr. Steve Slagle (soloist: Jeff Miguel)

Haitian Fight Song by Charles Mingus, arr. Sy Johnson (soloists: Yi Chen, Ben Drury, Cole Stiegler, Drew Morton)

Gozar by Dan Cavanaugh (soloists: Brian Zeglis, Grace Leong, Nathaniel Gier)

The National Anthem by Carla Bley

Johnson County Landmark is devoted to the performance of original compositions by jazz masters past and present. Its programs have included the music of Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Tadd Dameron, Thad Jones, and Charles Mingus, as well as current stars Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
