Staff—
Jodi Schafer, director of Admissions and Financial Aid in the Tippie School of Management, has been appointed assistant dean of the full-time MBA program.
Students—
Misty Rebik, UI graduate student in the School of Urban and Regional Planning, received the Cmiel Award for work in organizing and developing the Iowa City Center for Worker Justice. Rebik received the award at the Iowa City Human Rights Commission 50th Anniversary Awards Breakfast Oct. 24 in Iowa City.
This award is given to a graduate student at the university who has made an impact in the community of Iowa City in the area of human rights.
University—
Daily Iowan editors were presented the Pacemaker Award—for general excellence in collegiate newspapers—at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in New Orleans Oct. 26.
This prestigious award, long considered the Pulitzer Prize among campus newspapers, recognizes The Daily Iowan as one of the top-five campus newspapers in the country. The honor is shared with the campus newspapers at Harvard, University of North Carolina, University of Indiana, and Penn State.
The ACP judged the entrants on a number of criteria: coverage and content; quality of writing and reporting; leadership on the opinion page; evidence of in-depth reporting; layout and design; and photography, art, and graphics. The material submitted came from the 2012-13 academic year, in which student editors Emily Busse (Bachelor of Arts, 2013) and Sam Lane (Bachelor of Arts, 2013) presided over The Daily Iowan.
Busse is now an account associate at LaunchSquad in San Francisco, and Lane works as a desk assistant at PBS NewsHour in Washington, D.C.
Faculty—
Susan Assouline, director of the Belin-Blank Center in the UI College of Education, will be a keynote speaker at the inaugural ANEIS conference in Porto, Portugal Nov. 22-23. The title of Assouline’s talk is “From Gifted Education to Talent Development: A Global Perspective.”
Assouline will also be teaching the opening course, “Key Concepts and Issues in Gifted Education,” at the University of New South Wale’s Certificate of Gifted Education Program in Sydney, Australia in January 2014.
Nicholas Colangelo, director emeritus of the Belin-Blank Center and dean of the UI College of Education, will present "Potential Development and Gifted Education," at an international conference in The Netherlands today, Friday, Nov. 1.
Staff—
Laurie Croft, administrator of professional development in the College of Education, will be presenting “Differentiation: A Whole School Program” in Quezon City in the National Capital Region of the Philippines at the end of November.
Croft will also head to New Delhi in the Delhi National Capital Territory in India to be a plenary speaker at the 1st International Conference on Research in Education and Curriculum Planning for Gifted Minds Feb. 4-6, 2014.
