The Institute of Medicine as a Profession (IMAP) released its new study Friday, Oct. 11, on conflict of interest (COI) policies that shows the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine has one of the five strongest COI policies in the nation.

The Academic Medicine report shows that U.S. medical schools overall have made great progress limiting ties to drug and device makers, but many still need to make more progress.

The top five medical schools that do the best job of meeting the national COI standards are: Emory University School of Medicine, University of Massachusetts Medical School, UI Carver College of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine, and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine.

“The success of our program is a tribute to the faculty and staff who have worked so hard to make our program work and to everyone who participates by updating their disclosures,” says Deborah Thoman,assistant vice president for compliance and accreditation, and UI privacy officer. “We essentially have a 100 percent compliance rate, so it’s very clear that everyone here is committed to openness and transparency.”
