Cutting-edge quartet works with student composers during latest residency
Friday, October 11, 2013

The JACK Quartet, current residents of the UI String Quartet Residency Program, spent much of this week with composition and string students in the School of Music. A week of mentoring and developing students' work will culminate with the JACK performing UI student compositions Friday, Oct. 11, in Riverside Recital Hall.

At the free concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., the JACK will perform work by students Joshua Marquez, Justin Comer, Leonid Iogansen, Alexandros Spyrou, Nima Hamidi, Jason Palamara, and Brian Penkrot.

JACK violinist Ari Streisfeld says they've enjoyed working with the students, "showing our expertise in new music, opening their ears and eyes to the capabilities of their instruments beyond the classical standard repertoire."

In addition, the JACK will give a free public performance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, in Riverside Recital Hall.

The recipient of New Music USA's 2013 Trailblazer Award, the JACK Quartet has performed to critical acclaim at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, and other world-renowned venues. The members of the quartet met while attending the Eastman School of Music and studied closely with the Arditti Quartet, Kronos Quartet, Muir String Quartet, and members of the Ensemble Intercontemporain.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to attend this concert, contact the School of Music in advance at 319-335-1603.
