The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free jazz recital by the UI Latin Jazz Ensemble at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The recital, which is open to the public, will feature music from composers Rafael Dos Santos (Brazilian pianist/educator and former UI jazz graduate student), Victor Mendoza, Ray Vega, and others. Styles include mambo, rumba, cha-cha-chá, bossa nova, maracatu, and samba.

The Latin Jazz Ensemble (LJE), under the direction of School of Music lecturer James Dreier, is one of the major jazz ensembles at UI. The group studies, examines, and performs jazz that has roots in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and the United States. The group consists of undergraduate and graduate students, performs throughout the state, and has recorded three CDs.

LJE members are Jonathon Birdsall (saxophones), Jeff Miguel (saxophones/flute), Ryan Wedoff (trumpet), Joe Sackett (trumpet), Megan Lathan (trombone), Jack Finnegan (trombone), Grace Leong Zhe Fui (piano), Genji Onishi (bass), Carlo Kind (drums and percussion), and Joe Verstraete (drums and percussion).

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
